From Randy:
Bylakuppe Tibetan refugee community originated in 1959 by people fleeing Chinese occupation and oppression. Puja at 5 am, chanting. 5:30, flat bread and butter tea served to 1100 monks sitting on floor in long rows of 50. Served by group of 30 or 40, sometimes running at top speed in their long wrap-around robes. Fully one-third, maybe half of the monks were running toward prayer hall because they were late. Some were apparently sleepy because I saw a number yawning and nodding off only to be nudged or prodded by a neighbor. 6:15, two other monks pass out ten rupee notes to everyone, including westerners, because of special prayer day with installation of a geshe (ie PhD). Doors and windows all open with songs of birds mixing with chanting at daybreak. Monks exit at 6:45 with more prayers at home.
